When Is a Breast Lift Needed?

Due to the body’s natural aging process, over time, less and less elastin and collagen are produced. With the loss of these proteins, the skin loses its elasticity and starts to sag, causing the breasts to start drooping.

Pregnancy, nursing, weight loss, and family genetics only add to this aesthetic concern, which gives way to deflated-looking breasts. Even worse, enlarged areola and nipples may have moved down the front of the breasts and now point downwards instead of straight ahead.

Benefits of a Breast Lift in Miami, FL

While breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgeries being performed, breast lift surgery is in high demand by women who do not want to increase volume but simply want to regain the perky, youthful breasts they once had. Here are some of the most common reasons women consider breast lifts to reverse the aesthetic issues causing them concern.

  • Pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding can affect a woman’s breasts in numerous ways, which lead to a loss in volume, deflation, sagging, or drooping.
  • Some women find that it first becomes visible when losing weight as sagging in their breasts before anywhere else on their bodies.
  • As a woman ages, she may notice that changes in skin elasticity are causing her breasts to sag and appear more elongated than they were in the past, leading to decreased self-esteem and self-confidence.
  • Breast implant removal may lead to sagging or drooping after the extra volume is removed. A breast lift performed simultaneously with breast implant removal surgery will give the patient an even more significant boost in self-confidence.

Am I a Suitable Candidate for a Breast Lift?

A breast lift is a safe and effective procedure for women looking to enhance their sagging breasts’ appearance. The best candidates for a mastopexy are women who have:

  • Drooping breasts that have lost volume or shape
  • Sagging breasts, excessively large areolas, or downward-pointing nipples
  • Asymmetrical breasts
  • Breast skin that has lost its elasticity

Breast lift candidates should also be in good overall health, have realistic expectations for their surgery, and be able to maintain a stable weight. Women planning to have children are encouraged to postpone having a mastopexy since pregnancy and nursing can reverse the effects of a breast lift.

Breast Lift Incision Options

During your consultation, Dr. de la Pedraja will listen to your aesthetic concerns and evaluate your breasts’ symmetry and your overall anatomy. Before recommending a treatment plan, he will consider your degree of breast ptosis (sagginess) and overall skin health.

To best address your unique needs, the three principal incision patterns for breast lift surgery will be discussed with you:

A periareolar incision is an incision pattern extending around the areola’s outer edge (the darker-colored skin surrounding the nipple), resulting in a generally well-concealed scar within the darkly pigmented areola skin.

“Lollipop” incision, which may include a periareolar incision as well as a vertical incision extending down the front surface of the breast. This allows for a greater degree of lifting and skin removal than the periareolar incision alone.

“Anchor” incision includes both the periareolar incision and the vertical incision down the front of the breast, as well as a horizontal incision placed beneath the natural breast crease. This allows for the greatest degree of lifting.

With any of these incision techniques, the size of overly enlarged areolas can be reduced. Simultaneously, downward-pointing nipples can be repositioned back in the breasts’ center and pointing forward into a more natural position.

What to Expect During Breast Lift Surgery

Dr. de la Pedraja performs breast lift surgery on an outpatient basis, typically with general anesthesia. Depending on the complexity of the patient’s surgical needs, breast lift surgery usually takes about two hours.

At the start of the procedure, the selected incision pattern is made, and the natural tissue is remolded and moved to a higher, younger-looking position on the chest wall. The nipple-areola complex is repositioned, and, if needed, some of the areola skin from around its perimeter is excised. Any excess skin and tissue are removed from the breasts to compensate for the loss of elasticity. The incisions are then closed with sutures.

Finally, soft bandages are applied together with a surgical bra, reducing swelling and providing additional support during the healing process.

What is Recovery Like for a Breast Lift?

Patients should arrange to be away from work for at least a week. During this time, their focus should be on getting plenty of rest and avoiding any strenuous activity, including heavy lifting and exercise.

Due to bruising, swelling, or tenderness, the patient may experience moderate to severe discomfort in the treatment area during the first 2-3 days after surgery. Taking pain relievers as directed by Dr. de la Pedraja will help alleviate any discomfort during this phase of recovery.

To minimize swelling and help the tissues heal properly, it’s vital that patients continue to wear a surgical bra for several weeks after surgery.

During postoperative follow-up appointments, patients will learn about when they’ll be able to resume their usual activities, including their exercise routine, and when they can start wearing the new bras they have purchased.
