Facelift & Neck Lift in Miami, Fl | Gables Plastic Surgery

As you age, you could be dismayed to find that the muscles in your face are starting to slacken. Your cheeks may be beginning to sag along the chin and jawbone, and a double chin might be beginning to form.

All these are obvious signs of aging and hard to conceal with makeup or clothing. Just as difficult to hide or disguise is the saggy skin may extend down your lower face, jaw, chin, and neck, becoming more noticeable over time.

Facelift and neck lift procedures redistribute and sculpt skin and fat while repositioning and tightening the underlying tissues and muscles. These procedures, performed separately or together, can help you recapture your youth, giving you a more alert and younger appearance.

With a neck lift, sometimes called a lower facelift, fat deposits and loose skin are removed from the jowls and beneath the chin, tightening the neck muscles around the neck. Any excess skin is trimmed, resulting in a sharper, aesthetically pleasing angle between the neck and jawline.

What is a Facelift?

A facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, is a facial plastic surgery procedure used to reposition fat and muscle tissue to improve the signs of aging highlighted above. It is also designed to remove the excess skin from the face and neck.

What Is a Neck Lift?

A neck lift, or lower rhytidectomy, is another highly versatile procedure designed to remove signs of aging, as highlighted above. It is designed to remove excess skin from the neck and possibly the lower face.

Am I a Candidate for Facelift or Neck Lift Surgery?

The ideal candidates for either procedure should be in good health and have realistic expectations of how their facelift or neck lift procedure can impact their lives.

Who Can Benefit from Facelift or Neck Lift Surgery

For rejuvenating the entire face, neck, and cheek areas, combination facelift and neck lift surgery might be the best solution.

If you’re uncomfortable with visible signs of aging with sagging skin on your midface or jawline, then you might benefit from a facelift.

Facelift surgery is helpful for patients who want to correct:

  • Sagging and excess cheek skin
  • Facial sagging all along the jawline
  • Midface or cheeks sagging with puffy bags under the eyes
  • Creases between the mouth and nose (nasolabial folds)
  • Skin wrinkling and creasing
  • Loose facial skin, most notably in the lower third of the face
  • Saggy cheeks and jowls

A neck lift can also remove the effects of decades of aging by removing excess fat from the chin and neck area and tightening muscles and skin in the neck. Sagging jowls, as well as any neck banding, can also be tightened.

Neck lift surgery is helpful for patients wanting to:

  • Tighten sagging neck skin
  • Redefine the jawline
  • Remove a “turkey neck” caused by loose skin
  • Remove a double chin caused by loose skin or fat
  • Repair and tighten muscle banding
  • Recontour the neck
  • Remove pockets of fat deposits through liposuction

What Do Facelift and Neck Lift Procedures Involve?

The specifics of your facelift or neck lift procedures will depend on the outcome of your consultation with Dr. Jorge de la Pedraja, where all of your options will be discussed and your surgery planned.

During a facelift, after receiving general anesthesia or IV sedation, discreet incisions are made. Starting at the hairline near the temples and extending in front of the ear,  around the ear and behind,  then along the hairline. The underlying tissues and muscles are repositioned and tightened. The skin is pulled tight and re-draped, with the excess being trimmed, creating a youthful appearance.

For both procedures, the incisions are closed with sutures. Being hidden by the hairline, and the outline of the ear,  they become increasingly difficult to see as they heal.

Together, the facelift and neck lift can give you a truly stunning rejuvenation!

After Care and Recovery

As soon as you have recovered from being sedated, you’ll be able to be driven home by a friend or family member. You’ll take with you any prescriptions you’ll need to minimize the risk of infection and to manage any lingering discomfort.

While the recovery process will differ for each patient, prepare for a total recovery time for either a facelift or neck lift of around two weeks.

Facelift Recovery

After a full facelift procedure, recovery can take about two weeks, with more dramatic and longer-lasting results than less invasive procedures.

It’s normal to experience mild bruising and swelling during the first few days, and this can be relieved with a cold compress applied to the neck and face and by elevating the head. Drains are typically removed after a day or two, and you might find that pain medications are not even necessary. Your sutures will usually be removed after about one week.

After about two weeks, you should be able to resume normal activities, making sure to include only minimal exercise.

Neck Lift Recovery

Swelling and bruising are typical side effects of neck lift surgery and will generally diminish within the initial recovery period and usually will disappear in about one month.

Recovery from neck lift surgery will also require recovery time. You can plan to return to your regular activities within ten days and resume exercise after about two weeks.

Miami Facelift and Neck Lift FAQS

Facelift or neck lift procedures are less dependent on a patient’s age than the symptoms. If a patient is bothered by sagging jowls or deep facial creases, they may be candidates for a facelift or neck lift at any age.

Every patient reacts differently to invasive procedures. Reducing activity and sleeping with the head elevated will help reduce swelling within two weeks of the procedure.

Incisions for a facelift are usually made along the hairline and within the natural contours behind and in front of the ears. During the neck lift procedure, approximately one-inch-long incisions are discreetly made under the chin and behind the ears.

A facelift is performed under general anesthesia or through IV sedation but has less impact than other types of surgical procedures. Safety is of the utmost concern, and, together with careful planning, screening, and preparation, the patient receives the highest degree of attention from Dr. Jorge de la Pedraja.

The most common risk of the surgery is a hematoma or bleeding under the skin, which can be limited by the patient observing a cautious recovery period. Other common risks include scarring, sensation changes, and prolonged swelling, which can all be limited to the first month.

Most people feel that facelifts help them to look between 10-15 years younger. The results of the surgeries are permanent, but unfortunately, over time, your face will continue to age.

To keep pace with the aging process, patients may return for a follow-up, limited procedure after about 8-10 years.

Dr. Jorge de la Pedraja uses his expertise to effectively hide the incisions from surgery. The scars will naturally heal and be relatively inconspicuous in a matter of months.
