Lip Augmentation Overview
Many exciting options are available to enhance the appearance of your lips. Keep in mind that the lips are very expressive—any augmentation needs to be carefully performed to avoid the overly filled “duck lips” that we have all seen being sported by celebrities. The appearance of your lips is a big part of our overall look, and getting it right with lip augmentation performed by Dr. de la Pedraja is vital.
For fuller, plumper lips, you could consider lip augmentation by either surgical or non-surgical procedures. The goal is to enhance the appearance of your lips by improving lip definition, increasing their fullness, or creating the ideal ratio between your upper and lower lips.
If you prefer an implant-free approach, dermal fillers and cosmetic injectables can add volume, wrinkles, smooth fine lines, and create a youthful-looking and attractive appearance. The temporary effects of injectables and fillers can let you see what is possible before trying a more permanent approach. Dr. de la Pedraja will discuss your options with you during your first consultation.
Preparing for Lip Augmentation
Before the procedure, the patient should take note of the following:
- Medications that could cause bleeding should be avoided, including aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen.
- Tylenol can be used for any fever, headache, or pain.
- The area should be clean and free of makeup.
- A topical anesthetic may be applied to your lips an hour before treatment to numb the area.
- Cooling the area prior and after can reduce swelling and bruising significantly.
Topical anesthesia is often used at the beginning of lip enhancement procedures as well as an anesthetic with adrenalin in the injectable syringes, making the procedure as comfortable as possible for the patient.
Dr. de la Pedraja performs lip augmentation in two ways: surgical and non-surgical.
Surgical Lip Augmentation Methods
The colored portion of the lips above and below the mouth is called the vermillion. With the tissue of the lips being thin and rich in blood vessels, it is distinctly different from the surrounding skin.
Vermilion advancement is a surgical procedure that removes skin from above or below the vermillion border, followed by repositioning the vermillion to create a new lip border.
When using fat transfer to augment the lips, the fat is harvested by liposuction procedure from the abdomen or thigh before being injected into the lips with blunt cannulas. You can expect more swelling and downtime than dermal filler injections.
As an excellent way to create fullness and correct uneven lips, in a dermal graft procedure, a fat graft is taken from the deep layer of the skin within the mouth and then positioned under the lips from incisions made inside the mouth.
For those with down-turned corners of the mouth or with excess skin above the lips, a lip lift can increase the upper lip area and eliminate the sad or angry impression that a downturned mouth can project.
Non-Surgical Lip Augmentation Methods
The most popular non-surgical cosmetic lip augmentation procedures performed are those using dermal fillers. Most fillers contain hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that can increase volume by stimulating collagen production.
The FDA approves dermal fillers for use in the lips, and these include Restylane Silk® with Lidocaine (a local anesthetic), Restylane®-L Gel also with Lidocaine, and Juvéderm® Ultra XC.
Most fillers will deliver results lasting between 3-6 months, although Juvéderm® Ultra XC is reported to successfully provide results for up to one year after initial treatment.
While Restylane® Silk effectively adds volume to the lips, it is also thin enough to be skillfully injected into the area just above the lips, smoothing the vertical lines we know as smoker’s lines.
While the other fillers on the market have not specifically been approved for lip augmentation, they can be used in combination with Restylane® and Juvéderm® to improve the results achieved.
More frequently encountered by women than men, lip lines can cause cosmetic issues like lipstick bleed. To minimize deep lip lines, Dr. de la Pedraja offers laser resurfacing to treat surface issues such as sunspots and acne scars and stimulate collagen production. Laser resurfacing removes several layers of skin, reducing the depth of lip lines, and can also plump the lips by increasing lip volume.
