Helpful Tips for Your Breast Lift Recovery

A breast lift is a common procedure to enhance the youthful appearance of breasts and the overall figure. While all patients and breast lift surgeries are unique, here are some tips to help during your recovery period.

At Gables Plastic Surgery, Dr. Jorge de la Pedraja wants your breast lift in Miami recovery to go as smoothly as possible.

What is Breast Lift Surgery?

A breast lift is a rejuvenation procedure that lifts and repositions breasts on the chest wall and raises nipples to a more youthful position, creating a more enhanced breast contour. Anatomy, tissue quality, and goals will determine the method to restructure the breast shape and reposition the nipple and areola.

Breast lift addresses:

  • Sagging or uneven breasts
  • Decreased volume
  • Stretched or drooping areolas
  • Nipple and areola location
  • Stretched-out skin
  • Nipples that point downward
  • Nipples that appear below the breast crease
  • Pendulous or elongated breasts

Breast Lift Recovery Tips

1. For 4-6 weeks following surgery, patients should wear a surgical or sports bra to provide adequate support to the healing breasts, including while sleeping. Avoid underwires during this time as wires can irritate incisions.

2. The first few days following a breast lift are difficult and include and discomfort. Dr. de la Pedraja may prescribe medication for you. Relax and avoid unnecessary movement; however, walking is encouraged to avoid blood clots.

3. Following your breast lift, avoid strenuous activities that increase heart rate or use chest muscles for 4-6 weeks. However, begin walking as soon as you are able. Typically, patients can return to work 1-2 weeks after the surgery unless their job is physically demanding.

4. Avoid sleeping on your stomach following your breast lift. This position places too much pressure on your chest. Instead, sleep on your back or propped up.

5. Avoid showering for at least 48 hours after your breast lift. After that, it’s important to keep incisions clean. Be careful when cleansing the skin around the incision and handling any tapes or steri strips. Avoid taking baths until incisions are fully recovered, approximately 6 weeks.

6. While sutures come out within 2 weeks, it may take months for incisions to become less noticeable. You may be prescribed topical treatments to help diminish scars.

Typically, a breast lift is a safe, effective procedure for women looking to enhance the appearance of their breasts. Dr. de la Pedraja recommends breast lift candidates:

  • Be in good overall health
  • Be at a stable, healthy weight
  • Be non-smokers or willing to quit
